Kitchen sink ikat: Pumpkin Sp(i/a)ce Invaders

Another Penland ikat project! The official name for this piece is Pumpkin Sp(i/a)ce Invaders because of the color and the shapes. (The second word is "spice" and "space" blended together. 🙂) I also call this one my kitchen sink project because I packed a ton of experiments in a single piece.

The piece is twice as long as shown in the picture below. This is the best side — the design gets progressively more unregistered as you move through the piece

My Penland desk was always covered in a dozen projects — complete chaos.

My experiments included:

  • Halftones of various sizes with every-other-thread shifting

  • Satin weave

  • Lunatic Fringe's naturally colored cotton (light brown and dark brown)

  • Dyeing different shades of yarn in the same dye bath

  • Alternating stripes of color within a design

I learned so much from this and want to try each of these techniques again — just not all at the same time.

Here's a close up of the front and back. I love how you can see a ghost image of the pattern on the back of the piece.
