Maiwa Natural Dye Workshop: Overdye with indigo

Indigo overdye week in the Natural Dye Workshop — it’s the final week creating our natural dye palette. (!!)

I especially enjoyed this module. All these samples were made with the same fructose vat that carried me though Journey Into Indigo. I’ve missed it.

All my fibers need a good rinse and press. Most of my indigo dyed pieces are a little ashy because of the calx — they have not been neutralized in vinegar.

First, the indigo only samples. The fabrics were dyed in super long strips. I regret not cutting them up into shorter segments. These were horrible to deal with in the vat!

Wool got 3 dips and silk 2. For the cellulose fabrics, I did a mini-dip sampler on each strip, ranging from 1-4 dips. My American Maid yarns got 2 dips.

Now the overdyes, grouped by fiber type. Protein got 1 dip, cellulose 2.

And finally, exhaust baths. These were dipped twice in a weak indigo vat. (Very interesting to set this up!)
